This Blog's swan song...for now.
Well it was bound to happen, I have nothing left! OK, maybe not but 2 brushes with death in the past six months has left me thinking (I survived being hit by a car while crossing the street on foot 4 weeks ago without any damage despite flying 10 feet in the air and landing on my back and head). After covering my legacy , my kids are well off in life without being drugged out or spending time in jail, writing a book about basic bicycle repair and this blog, I figured it was time to think about me.
Besides, I have covered just about everything I know, adding anything else would just be re-ashing old stuff to please the search engine ratings of the site and that's not what I'm about. I've renewed with my old passion of building and flying free flight model airplanes and I won't even blog about it so I have all kinds of time to dedicate to the hobby.
Do not despair, the blog is not going anywhere. It will be here as long as blogger keeps hosting it and I will renew the .ca address. I will also keep responding to comments and answer any of your email questions with pleasure.
I think I suffer from ADD so it is possible that I might pop back in with an article here and there, but don't hold your breaths. I have been privileged to spread information that, from the feedback I got, was used wisely and fruitfully. For that I figure it is mission accomplished.
I just figured I owed you guys at least this explanation so you don't expect something that won't happen.
Enjoy every minute of your life as if it was your last, tell the people that you care for that you love them often, ride defensively ALL the time and Godspeed.

well take care of your self in the meantime. I have to say that this blog helped me become a bike mechanic taking apart bikes and assembling them. now thanks to you I have over 16 bikes in the basement and a whole pile of parts :) I recently just got into Rat Rods and customizing. Just wanted to say that I am very grateful to you sharing your knowledge.
actually i paint model cars in the my spare time so reading your model car blog will be awesome!

Gerry, This blog is magnificent. I wish you every happiness in all you choose to do now. I join with everyone who has thanked you for advice over the years. I'm currently trying to work out how to correct various problems with my fiancée's 1981 Raleigh Cameo ladies bike - in particular, the Sturmey Archer three-speed gear hub that I seem to have messed up. Various tips on here have been a great help. All the best! Simon
Claire, it's great to hear that another bike is saved. I hope you visited http://bikeoverhaul.blogspot.com where I have a full rebuild and repaint documented.
Simon, the Sturmey requires that you adjust it while in second gear. If you manage to get second gear working, the rest should be good. Put the shifter in second and adjust the cable tension until it runs good. That's it.

Wow Gerry I just cmae across this Site today when looking for articles for myself and my daughters bikes that we have gotten this christmas.
Can't say I'm an enthusiast as such as I have'nt ridden since being a teenager but we have moved to a place out of town so it's going to be both fun and practical.
I've been reading your blogs and they are awesome :). Except for the ones that expain your misfortune and injuries!!, so sorry to read about that and I truly hope you are back to your old self these days and that you had a lovely christmas!!
My original reason for coming across this site is that we assembled our bikes and mine is fine but my daughters front wheel remains stiff and won't spin. I am concerned that I have something fixed too tightly and I am worried if she attempts to ride it that she might be injured. It does turn od wheeling it along the ground but it's stiff.
Anyway sorry for the monolgue but it just kept on coming :)
Anyway it's New Years Eve tomorrow so I wish you all the best from here in good old Oz

Hello Karen,
Sounds like something is rubbing on the tire. Check if it is aligned properly and not rubbing on the fork. If that is not it, take the wheel off and see if the axle on the wheel turns freely. If it's not, you'll have to refer to the how-to grease wheels bearings in the article section or simply return the faulty wheel where you bought the bike.
