BMX REBUILD PART 1
I have a kid in the neighbourhood who heard that I fixed bikes. He had taken apart his BMX to do a paint job himself and now had no clue how to put it back in one piece. So in exchange for an appearence on this blog and a few lawn mowings, the kid is back on his newly painted BMX and you get to see how it was done. This also gave me an opportunity to work with a threadless fork for the first time. The trick about those is that the gooseneck plays a very important part in keeping all of it together.

This article is image heavy and so I will make it in two parts. Also, most of the details you don't see in this rebuild can be found elsewhere on this blog or will be coming up very shortly. I don't know the make of this particular BMX, but from what I can make of its construction, it is made to withstand heavy punishement in extreme conditions.
One last note, when putting back a bike together after a paint job, be careful not to scratch that brand new delicate finish.

first off i just wanna say how helpful this website is...iv recently started fixing up an old bmx bike from the eighties...just wondering if its possible to get replacement bearing cups for the one piece style crank set anywhere in canada....cheers
I'm happy to hear that this article helped you out. For the bearing cups, I suggest you drop by your local bikeshop with the old ones. I recently found out that they are not all the same size. If you find another BMX for cheap or free, they may fit and you will have a lot of other spare parts.

hey cool site it is very helpful for me. me and my dad build custom chopper bikes and some of the info on the site os really helpful
I can't get the bearing cups out... Im trying to get my bike ready for a paint job, and I just can't seem to get them loose. Any ideas?
Worst case scenario, use masking tape on the cups. Trim the tape with an Exacto blade for a clean job.

Hi Gerry Lauzon
I spraypainted my bmx today with the pedals still in. I want to change the bearings... will the bearings fall away or do they stay in one place? Can you reply ASAP
The bearings are held together in a crown. They shouldn't fall out all over the place.
Gerry :)
No offense intended but i could build that bike when i was 10.When i was 11 i made a 3 wheeled bike that worked. i got real big into bikes till i was 19,
the sizes for the bottem brackets on bmx bikes ( real bmx bikes) are american, mid, euro, and spanish.
Thanks for sharing that info on the Bottom Brackets bro.
Gerry :)
Im a new BMXer and while i was catwalking with my friend i fell and the front wheel turned to the side while the handle bars remained still, i moved it back to the same position as the handle bars, is this a bad thing? because i can go get it fixed, but do I have too?
im wondering how to fix the bearings in the sprocket of my bike any one no how to do that ?
Replace them. Simply follow the steps in the article.
Gerry
im glad i found this site, it will help me out greatly. ok so my front tire is has been shaking and i dont know what it is, the tire is on completely and the bolts are tightened. A friend said it might be the bearings in my front tire. if he was right i was wondering if there is a way to fix this problem and how. thanks.
Definitely sounds like loose bearings. Go to the "how-to articles" link at the top of the blog. I have a wheel bearing article.
